BURLEIGH HEADS MOWBRAY PARK RISING STARS CLAIM AUSSIES TOP HONOURS

Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park (BHMP) rising stars Jasmine Raywood and Ethan Callaghan have been named the Competitors of the Carnival for the 2025 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

Raywood was the top medallist from the carnival, successfully collecting six golds, two silver and two bronze medals across the U19 and Open age groups.

In her last year in the U19’s, Raywood was determined to go out on a high and go out on a high she did.

“All year has been leading up to this. All week I’ve been dreading and also looking forward to today.

“The ski race is my favourite race, I love it and to win conditions like this against this calibre of girls is just amazing.

“In the U19’s we have girls who are already in the [Iron] Series, girls who I have been racing against all my life… so to be able to get a medal in these conditions, let alone a gold medal, it’s amazing,” she said.

The 18 year old has already made a name for herself on the Shaw and Partners Iron Series, making through the knock-out stages to finish 12th in the Grand Eliminator final.

Known for her surf ski prowess, Raywood mixes her time between her Ironwoman and Surf Life Saving with sprint kayaking, heading straight from Aussies into an international training camp.

“I’m starting my two week camp for the Australian Kayaking team [today] as we are about to head overseas for the World Cup season and U23 World Championships. I’m so stoked to have made that and there is another guy in U19’s who also made that team… the fact that we have people who are doing both [surf and kayaking] and making those World Cup teams, plus so many more from the opens doing the same, it’s amazing,” he said.

Callaghan had a stand out Shaw and Partners Iron Series, qualifying through to the 2024-25 season as the winner of the Next Gen Series and securing a podium finish in the opening round.

He continued to thrive building into the Aussies where he walked away with seven medals, including three gold, three silver and a bronze.

Opening Super Sunday in sensational style with a win in the U19 Male Board, digging deep to run up the beach with four others and manage to get to the line just ahead.

“It feels really good to get the gold in the board cause I got silver last year so it’s always nice to get one up from last year.

“I’m not really good at sprint finishes but today I just managed to pull one out and get it done,” he said.
