Australia, Estonia and United States confirmed their spot in the playoffs to join Italy, Canada and Scotland on a frantic final day of round-robin action at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship on Thursday (1 May).
Dean Hewitt and Tahli Gill, along with Italy’s Amos Mosaner and Stefania Constantini, booked their places straight into the semi-finals owing to their finishes in the group standings.
The Australians defeated Spain 8-3 and New Zealand 7-5 to wrap up the round-robin with eight wins and one loss to top Group B, while the Italians continued their perfect run in Fredericton with an 8-5 extra-end win over the Netherlands to finish 9-0 in Group A.
Who they will play for a spot in the final will be decided in qualification games taking place tomorrow morning (2 May).
An extra end and a measure were needed to determine that Scotland advanced to the playoffs in second, ahead of Canada, after Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds pipped Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant 8-7 in their final round-robin clash. The Scots managed an unlikely steal after Peterman’s final draw came up just short to the disappointment of the home crowd gathered for the blockbuster game.
The result means that Scotland will take on the United States, who finished Group B in third-place, while Canada will take on second-place finisher Estonia.
In a nervous final session of action for Group B, with 32 possible permutations, Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse defeated Spain 10-2 and benefited from Switzerland seeing off Japan 7-6 in an extra end to confirm their place in the top three.
At the same time, Estonia overcame a tough battle against Czechia to get over the line in a 7-6 extra end victory to book their place in the playoffs.
As teams go up, so too do they go down. With the worst records in Groups A and B, Netherlands and Spain, respectively, have automatically been relegated, meaning they are no longer guaranteed a spot at next year’s tournament.
Denmark, Türkiye, People’s Republic of China and Czechia will meet in relegation games tomorrow morning to decide which two teams will also go down.
The semi-finals, streaming live on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app for mobile devices in selected territories, will follow in the evening.
The 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is also doubling as a qualifier for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, with Olympic Qualification Points to be awarded to teams based on results. These points will be used to determine quota spots*.
For more information on Olympic qualification, see here.
*As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the Milano Cortina Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Milano Cortina 2026.
